Work Barge – Kenmare Resources

Posted on 4 Apr 2022, Mon
Summary:

Kenmare Resources plc is an established mining company that operates the Moma Titanium Minerals Mine, located on the northeast coast of Mozambique.

This mine has been in commercial production since 2009 and is recognised as a major supplier of mineral sand products to a global customer base operating in over 15 countries. Kenmare’s products are key raw materials processed into intermediate products and ultimately consumed in everyday “quality-of-life” products, such as paints, plastics and ceramic tiles.

The corporate head office is located in Dublin, Ireland, and the company is listed on the London Stock Exchange as well as Euronext Dublin.

Scope:

As part of the mine expansion project, Duys was contracted to design and build a work barge, to be used for servicing
the mining dredge and floating Wet Concentration Plant (WCP).

The scope was extensive but the primary prerequisite and engineering challenge was that the work barge needed to have 70sqm of usable deck space, whilst still being road transportable for the delivery to the site.

Design:

The work barge was designed with two pontoons, each pontoon narrow enough for road transport with an easy bolt-up of the pontoons for the reduced construction time and cost on-site.

  • Diesel engine powering the generator and hydraulic pump
  • Control cabin/ wheelhouse
  • 2 X Hydraulic-powered Z drives for the powered movement of the barge in the mining pond.
  • 1 x 60 Ton, hydraulic crane
  • 1 x 20 Ton hydraulic crane
  • All safety equipment/systems
  • Night operation and safety lighting/ marine standards
  • Specialist corrosion protection
  • Non-slip deck

Construction:

The barge was constructed in our Richards Bay factory. There we were able to complete trial assembly, cold commissioning, and testing.

After final client approval, we split the two pontoons and made the barge ready for transport to the site.

Hot Commissioning

Once the barge arrived at site, the basic assembly was done by another contractor.

We did the connection of the hydraulic and electrical systems, hot commissioning, testing, operator training and handover.
